At Saint John Paul II University Parish, we provide many opprotunities for acts of service on the part of the laity during the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. Below are the liturigical ministries that you may request training for.
If you wish to be trained in any of the liturgical functions described below, please contact one of the parish staff.
Altar Servers:
If you wish to be trained as an altar server, please contact Mike Roth.
Music / Choir Ministry:
One of the many beautiful and special aspects of Saint John Paul II University Parish is the access to a truly wide variety of music, and the accessibility to UNT College of Music students, used in both the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass and retreats (ex. Pioneer/Eagle Awakening; Semester Retreats; Adventure Retreats).
Please speak with someone from the choir after Mass to join the choir for that Mass.
For general choir inquiries, please contact someone from campus ministry, or the music director David Gillmore
Ushers:
When any person walks into the doors they are greated by an usher. An usher is a warm, welcoming person who, even when the weather doesn't permit, always has smile on their face, welcomes you to Holy Mass, and offers to you the necessary items (hymnals, bulletins, etc.) that a person might desire to use during Holy Mass. An usher will also, during the Offertory, officiate the passing around of the collection baskets.
Lectors:
During Liturgy of the Word, readings from Sacred Scripture are offered to us not only for our benefit but also as an offering of thanksgiving to Almighty God for having shared with us through his holy prophets and writers His sacred design and truths.
To be a Lector, one must have a clear and articulate speaking voice, be fluent in the language the reading is being dictated, and know how to convey and dictate Sacred Scripture in a manner that which upholds the dignity of the text. One must also dress accordingly for Holy Mass so as to, in ones appearance, uphold that same dignity and reverence for the office by which the lay person is exercising in.
